PictureWinners of the 2011 Southern Breeze Writing Contest - I am on the right.
I think it’s quite valuable to enter contests, especially if you can receive feedback. Writing to a deadline is also good as it forces you to keep to a specific timeline. Sometimes you get a plaque or certificate for your winning entry; other times, it could be a financial reward. But, either way, it shows that you are a serious, working writer, and looks good on a resume. Here’s my list of awards:

Southern Breeze Writing for Children Contest - First Place 2011 and 2017

Saturday Evening Post Limerick Contest - Winner

Southern Christian Writers' Conference - Second Place, Nonfiction

Golden Quill Poetry Contest - prize of free online writing course - Third Place

Barbara Karlin Picture Book Grant from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators - Letter of Merit for COUNT ON LEMONADE (picture book)

Porter Fleming Community Award Grant - Multicultural Biography
